Six East Granby Businesses and What Their Photos Miss
Research conducted August 2026. Figures and website details reflect that date.
East Granby Invented an Industry and Lost It
The Ridge That Decided the Town's Shape
A traprock ridge runs north and south through East Granby and cuts the town nearly in half. That ridge settled most of what followed. The first families here had to travel nine miles over the mountain to reach the church in Simsbury, so in 1729 they petitioned for a church of their own [1]. It took until 1736 to get one [1]. The land had been surveyed in 1688 and settled in the first decade of the 1700s [1]. Lots ran back in long strips from what are now North and South Main Streets [1]. Those strips are still legible in the field lines.
For two centuries the town was small and getting smaller. The population fell from roughly 1,500 around 1820 to 851 by the Civil War, and reached a low of 661 in 1890 [1]. Farms were too small to divide among heirs, so the children left [1]. Tobacco arrived in 1850, and by 1870 some 117 families were growing it [1]. For a stretch, more barns went up than houses [1].
Spoonville and the Industry the Town Could Not Hold
There is one exception in the record, and it explains everything after it. In 1843 William B. Cowles went into business with a silversmith and the Rogers brothers of Hartford, making electroplated silverware at a mill on Spoonville Road [2]. The National Register nomination for the family's house states it without hedging: this was the first manufacturer of electroplated wares in the United States [2]. In 1845 and 1846 the works employed 98 men and 16 women, and sales in the first year came to $64,000 [2]. The neighborhood took its name from the spoons [2].
It was over inside five years. The nomination gives the reason and does not soften it. Competitors in Hartford, New Haven, and Waterbury sat closer to raw materials, customers, and skilled tradesmen, and East Granby's isolation made it hard to ship product or keep workers [2]. Asa Rogers left and started Rogers Brothers the following year [2]. That firm was later folded into International Silver. East Granby went back to farming.
What the Airport Changed, and When
Then the state built a runway two miles east. In January 1941 Connecticut bought 1,700 acres of tobacco ground in Windsor Locks and leased it to the federal government for a dollar a year [3]. The field was ready that summer [3]. East Granby gave up none of the land and took most of the overflow.
The numbers show the rest. The town held 684 people in 1900 and 1,327 in 1950 [4]. By 2020 it held 5,214 [4]. About 61 percent of its housing stock went up between 1950 and 1979 [5]. The connection the silver works needed had finally arrived, roughly a century late, and it belonged to the next town over.
Who Works Here Now, in Plain Numbers
A town of about 5,200 people now holds roughly 4,290 jobs and about 470 registered businesses [5]. Manufacturing accounted for 1,315 of those jobs across 29 employers in 2019, at an average wage well above the town's figure for all industries [6]. Nearly all of it sits along Bradley Park Road, Airport Park Road, and Connecticut South Drive, on the eastern edge, within sight of the runway. Barnes Aerospace runs two plants in that corridor, one of them the former MB Aerospace works [7]. Monrovia gave up its Connecticut nursery lease in 2025 [8]. At the other end of town, Old New-Gate, the copper mine chartered in 1707 that the colony turned into a prison in 1773, is now a state museum [9].
The Argument the Town Is Having
The Silverman Group applied to build about 700,000 square feet of warehouse space on Rainbow Road. The town put the likely property tax at roughly $1.7 million a year once assessed at full value [10]. On November 17, 2025, the Planning and Zoning Commission approved the special permit by a vote of three to two [11]. Earlier that month voters replaced First Selectwoman Eden Wimpfheimer with Jason Hayes, who took office in January 2026 [10][12]. As of August 2026 the outcome was unsettled. That is the room the six businesses below are standing in.
Marmon IEI: 23 Photos of Machines, None of People
The plant at 20 Bradley Park Road makes engineered wire and cable for nuclear utilities, transit systems, oil and gas, and fire safety [13]. It is the largest private employer in East Granby. ZoomInfo estimates 217 people at the location, and estimates like this one run rough [14]. The building has been here since the late 1970s or early 1980s, when Rockbestos opened it as a branch of its New Haven works [15]. New Haven closed in 1992 and everything moved here [15]. A 1996 merger with Surprenant Cable, of Clinton, Massachusetts, produced the name RSCC [15].
What Marmon IEI Says About Itself
The company presents itself as a division of Marmon Electrical, inside Marmon Holdings, which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway [13]. Its About page lists a mission, a vision, and four values: safety, development, engagement, and growth [13]. The safety line commits to zero harm as a permanent target [13]. The page also says the group is bringing all its companies and brands together under one master brand [13]. In September 2025 the company announced it would shift production from Attleboro, Massachusetts, into East Granby and Pearl, Mississippi, by the end of the first quarter of 2026 [16]. The Marmon Innovation and Technology Center is here too, and the company says roughly 70 percent of its testing and product development work is done for this division [17].
What the Technology Center Photographs Show
The Technology Center page carries 23 photographs [17], all uploaded in December 2024. Every one of them is named for a machine or a room. Aging Ovens. Banbury mixer. Rheology Lab. Smoke density chamber test. Accelerated weathering chamber. Extrusion testing line polymer processing facility [17]. The files run in sequence from one to twenty-two.
Somebody walked the building in one pass and photographed every station in order. This is commissioned work, not licensed stock, and it records a real place.
There is no team page anywhere in the site's navigation [13]. No leadership page either. The About page runs a heading saying the company's success depends on its people. Directly under it sits a row of counters, one of them for employees [13]. Twenty-three pictures of the equipment. None of the hands on it.
What Truck Drivers and Former Employees Say
The company's Google listing carries a 3.9 rating across seven reviews as of August 2026 [18]. Four of them are visible, and all four appear to be from drivers making deliveries. They say the unloading is fast and the crew is friendly, and one of them says he would come back [18]. That is the entire public consumer record of East Granby's largest manufacturer: truck drivers complimenting the loading dock.
Glassdoor holds nine employee reviews, filed under the older name Rockbestos Surprenant Cable [19]. Indeed shows a 3.8 rating for the East Granby location [20].
The website says Marmon IEI. Indeed says RSCC Wire and Cable. Glassdoor files the employee reviews under Rockbestos Surprenant Cable and the job postings under Marmon Holdings [19]. Three platforms, four names, one building.
Where Marmon IEI's Messaging and Its Reception Diverge
Reputation runs ahead of messaging here, on a narrow base. The public evidence is thin, but all of it is about people. The company's own materials are entirely about equipment. A corporate site consolidating a hundred-year-old Connecticut brand into a global master brand has structural reasons not to feature a single plant's workforce. Those reasons are real. They still leave the town's biggest employer with no face in a town of 5,200 people, at a moment when it is moving work in from another state.
Joining Tech: Blue Origin's Logo, Nobody's Face
Joining Technologies welds things that are hard to weld. Laser, electron beam, gas tungsten arc, and resistance welding, plus machining and build-to-print work, all out of one building at 17 Connecticut South Drive [21]. It started in 1992 as Energy Beam Labs [22]. ZoomInfo puts headcount at 86 and RocketReach at 66, and estimates that far apart should not be treated as firm [23][24]. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Joining Industries and shares ownership with American Cladding and JT Automation [21].
What Joining Technologies Says About Itself
Three claims repeat across the site. The company is a leading North American provider of advanced welding. Its people are the most knowledgeable and professional in the field. And it partners with customers rather than taking orders from them [21]. The tagline is Engage, Innovate, Deliver [21]. The industries listed are aerospace, automotive, medical devices, energy, firearms, and national defense [21].
The site also carries testimonials with real names attached. The president and chief executive of the Mott Corporation is quoted describing work that fuses materials which had not been fused before [21]. Velocys, Johnson Matthey, Boeing, and Parker are quoted as well [21].
What the Homepage Pictures Show
The loudest element on the homepage is a wall of customer logos [21], all uploaded in May 2026. GE Vernova, Mitsubishi Power, Marotta, Smith and Nephew, Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman, Kaman, BAE Systems [21]. Eight companies of that size agreed to have their marks displayed on the website of a job shop in East Granby. That is not a small thing to obtain, and someone worked to obtain it.
There is a video called Inside Joining Technologies on the homepage [21].
What is missing is straightforward. There is no team page and no leadership page in the navigation [21]. The only people named anywhere on the site are three men on the contact page, listed with phone extensions and email addresses [25]. They are Greg Miller, president, Robert Kobak, director of operations, and Tyler Modlish, manager of process development [25]. None of the three is pictured.
So the homepage carries eight logos belonging to other people's companies and zero photographs of anyone who works at this one.
What Customers Say
The Google listing shows a 4.9 rating across 15 reviews as of August 2026 [26]. Fifteen is a small number, but the composition is unusual. Most of them are from business customers, which is rare, and they cluster on three themes: response time, attention to detail, and consistency across long relationships. One reviewer describes hundreds of orders with almost no problems [26].
The most-quoted review is not about welding at all. A parent needed a threaded pipe cut for a cupcake stand for a daughter's Quinceanera. No hardware store in the area would do it. Joining Technologies did, and the reviewer named the employee who handled it: Justin Cyr [26].
Where Joining Tech's Messaging Meets Reception
Reputation runs well ahead of messaging. Customers write about individuals. Boeing and Blue Origin lend their marks. The company's own site says its specialists earn their reputations day by day, and then shows none of them. Job shops sell capability, and capability photographs as equipment, so this is a normal and understandable choice. It is also the one thing the customer reviews are not about.
Kinsley Group: Leadership Portraits from 2019
The Kinsley Group sells, rents, and services standby and prime power generation across the Northeast, from single-phase home units up to paralleling switchgear for hospitals and data centers. Corporate headquarters is at 14 Connecticut South Drive [27], with additional locations across New York and Pennsylvania [28]. Kenneth N. Kinsley founded the company in 1964 [28]. It is still run by a Kinsley, which makes it one of the few East Granby businesses whose decisions are made inside the town line. LinkedIn puts the company in the 51 to 200 employee band, which is the company's own figure [28].
What Kinsley Says About Itself
The mission statement is short: set the standard for power systems performance and service [28]. Two supporting claims recur. The first is longevity, specifically an exclusive distributorship of Kohler power systems running more than fifty years [28]. The second is people, framed as assembling a team of exceptional professionals [28]. The company describes itself as renowned for integrity and professionalism [28].
The website is unusually complete for a company this size. There are careers pages, an employee perks page, a technician training program called TechPath, a video gallery, an image gallery, a customer feedback page, and a form for submitting testimonials [27]. Somebody at Kinsley believes in this work.
What the Leadership Portraits Show
The leadership page holds exactly three people: David Kinsley, president; Lloyd Vandenburg, vice president of operations; and Shari Blackman, vice president of human resources [27]. Each has a full paragraph of biography, and the bios include hobbies and board service, which is a choice that makes people legible rather than decorative.
The photographs are datable. The files for David Kinsley and Lloyd Vandenburg were uploaded in December 2019. The file for Shari Blackman was uploaded in June 2020. The page itself was last updated in April 2026, so the text is being maintained while the pictures stay put. Those portraits are six and a half years old.
One name is missing. A chief operating officer, Matthew Borowiec, appears in trade coverage as filling a newly created role overseeing daily operations for both Kinsley businesses [29]. He is not on the leadership page.
This is the ordinary shape of a growing company. Sitting for portraits is a scheduling problem, and scheduling problems lose to service calls. The site is being tended; the photographs are simply the part that requires everyone to stand still on the same afternoon.
What Customers and Employees Say
Kinsley's Google listing carries a 3.2 rating across 14 reviews as of August 2026 [30]. That is a small sample and it skews toward homeowners rather than the commercial buyers who make up most of the business. The recurring themes among the critical reviews are billing, specifically how labor hours are counted, and delays in getting parts. The positive reviews describe fast response and thorough technicians [30].
Indeed shows a 2.8 rating for the East Granby location as of August 2026, with higher marks at some other Kinsley sites [31]. On Glassdoor, 62 percent of reviewers approve of the chief executive [32]. The company is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and its BBB profile notes a failure to respond to one complaint [33].
Where Kinsley's Messaging and Its Reception Diverge
This one runs the other way from most of the town. Messaging is ahead of reception. The website says renowned for integrity and professionalism; the review platforms, on small samples, describe a billing dispute pattern and a middling employer rating. That gap is narrow and the evidence is thin, but it points in the opposite direction from the neighbors. Kinsley is also the most invested in its own public presentation of any business here. That makes the age of the three portraits the most fixable thing on the page.
USA Mechanical: 14 Faces, None From the Field
USA Mechanical and Energy Services is a commercial mechanical contractor at 15-D International Drive, with a second shop in Middletown. It does HVAC, plumbing, piping, medical gas, and building automation for hospitals, schools, and labs [34]. Larry Fontaine founded it in 2003. David Ford bought it in 2017 and renamed it. A 2019 renovation brought the shop to more than 10,000 square feet. It joined Astra Service Partners in 2021, and Steve Dion has been president since January 2023 [34]. ZoomInfo estimates 29 employees, which looks low against the company's own statement that it added close to 30 people in about two years [35].
What USA Mechanical Says About Itself
The stated purpose is Driven to Rise, and the four core values are integrity, dedication to excellence, pleasant and friendly teamwork, and willingness [34]. One line does more work than the rest: the company says it offers the opportunity to build careers, not jobs [34]. That claim shows up again in the way the site is built.
What the Team Page Shows
There are fourteen people on the team page, every one named, every one photographed, and every one linked to an individual biography page [36]. For a mechanical contractor of this size that is a serious investment.
The file dates tell a story the page does not. Three portraits were uploaded in July 2022 with sequential file numbers twenty-one, twenty-two, and twenty-three. Two more went up in March 2023 with camera file numbers thirty-four frames apart. Two more in September 2024, twenty-six frames apart [36]. Those are three separate photo days, and the numbering shows people photographed one after another in the same session.
Then there are the outliers. The senior account executive's portrait dates to August 2018. One account manager's dates to March 2019. The human resources director's dates to May 2020 [36]. And the most recent addition, a controller added in April 2025, carries a generic camera-roll filename rather than the numbered pattern of the commissioned sessions.
The group photograph at the top of the page was uploaded in September 2022. The company says it nearly doubled its staff in roughly that period.
None of this is neglect. It is what happens when a company books a photographer every eighteen months and hires people in between. The gaps get filled with whatever is on hand.
What Customers and Employees Say
The Google listing shows a 5.0 rating from four reviews as of August 2026 [37]. Almost nobody rates their building's HVAC vendor, so the number stays small no matter how the work goes.
The testimonials on the company's own team page are attributed. A director of maintenance, an executive director at a senior housing community, and a facilities manager at SPIROL are quoted by name [36]. The senior housing testimonial names two crew members, Brian and Glenn, and says residents remarked on how considerate they were [36].
Indeed reviews spanning late 2022 into 2024 return to one point repeatedly: the president is present in the field and checks in with people [38]. The recurring criticism is communication between supervisors and technicians [38].
Where USA Mechanical's Messaging and Its Reception Diverge
Reputation runs ahead of messaging, by a narrower margin than anywhere else in town. The website says the company builds careers and then shows fourteen careers with names attached. That much is honest work.
The gap opens past the office door. Every person pictured works in leadership, finance, or account management. The people customers name in writing are Brian and Glenn, who install and service equipment, and they are not on the page. The company's public face is the half of the company that answers the phone, not the half that shows up at the building.
Copper Hill: The Homepage Still Says 2025
Copper Hill is a nine-hole public course at 20 Copper Hill Road, with a driving range and a teaching academy on adjacent land. The course was designed and built in the mid-1950s [39]. Vic Svenberg leased and operated it from the late 1970s for more than twenty years. In 1999 it was sold and renamed Fox Run at Copper Hill, and its condition slipped. Paul Banks, a PGA professional who had built the Copper Hill Golf Academy and Driving Range from a cornfield in 1994, took over the course around 2010 [40]. He has run it since.
What Copper Hill Says About Itself
The site makes one central claim: this is more than a golf course. It calls itself a social hub for northern Connecticut and describes a down-home atmosphere where friends meet [41]. The evidence backing that claim is on the site in the form of programming. There are five named leagues, including two ladies' leagues, a Thursday morning senior league, and a Monday beginner league [41]. There are four junior golf tiers by age, plus a junior league and junior tournaments [41]. There is FootGolf, cornhole, and volleyball [41].
That is a lot of structure for a nine-hole course, and it is the strongest thing the business says about itself.
What the Website Pictures Show
The site was rebuilt in April 2025 on a golf-industry platform. Six gallery images sit on the homepage [41], all uploaded that month and all named Gallery1 through Gallery6. None of the filenames says what it shows.
There is no staff page and no owner page. Paul Banks does not appear anywhere on the website [41].
And as of August 2026, the homepage still announces that the course has opened for the 2025 season [41]. A gift card graphic was added in November 2025, so somebody does log in [41]. This is what happens when the person who updates the website is also the person running the day-to-day operation of a golf course. A 2013 profile noted that running the business already left Banks little time to teach [40]. Twelve years and a restaurant later, the seasonal banner is not the thing that gets attention.
The Grill links off the site entirely, to its own separate domain [42].
What Golfers and Diners Say
The course holds a 4.5 rating across 67 Google reviews as of August 2026 [43]. The Grill holds 4.6 across 36 [44]. The academy and range hold 4.2 across 17 [45]. Together that is about 120 reviews for one property, which is real volume for a town of 5,200.
Three themes repeat. The greens, which reviewers call impeccable and among the best public greens they have played. The driving range, praised specifically for hitting off real grass instead of mats. And the events: live music, trivia, and music bingo on the patio [43][44].
Reviewers also name the owners by first name. One describes meeting Paul at the course and calls him salt of the earth. Another names Robin at the Grill and says she came over to ask about their meal [43][44]. Several note new ownership and a new menu at the restaurant [44].
Where Copper Hill's Messaging and Its Reception Diverge
Reputation is well ahead of messaging. Customers say the greens are exceptional and name the owner by his first name. The website says the 2025 season has opened and does not mention that he exists. The people arriving from Bradley an hour after landing, which one reviewer describes doing, found the place on a map, not on its homepage.
Brignole: 625 Reviews, No Page for the Family
Brignole Vineyards sits on Hartford Avenue near the center of town. It opened in 2016, founded by Timothy Brignole, whose family had been making wine at home for generations [46]. The tasting room pours 38 varieties, and the second floor is an event space that seats up to a hundred for weddings, showers, and corporate parties [47]. It is open seven days a week. Food trucks and live music run through the season, alongside ticketed events: wine dinners, pasta making, paint and sip, charcuterie classes, goat yoga [47].
What Brignole Says About Itself
The headline on the homepage is three words: family owned and operated [47]. Everything else radiates from that. The copy describes a warm and inviting place, family-friendly, pets welcome, a spot to make memories with people you love [47]. The wine club promises quarterly shipments chosen personally by the owner, and names him [47].
The claim is family. The claim is repeated everywhere.
What the Website Pictures Show
The site runs on Wix, and the image filenames on the homepage come from at least four different places.
One is a Sony camera file, still carrying its factory numbering with "edited" appended. One is a phone camera-roll file. One is a frame pulled out of a video, exported at the one-minute-fifty-seven-second mark and saved as still number twelve. And one is a Facebook or Instagram file, identifiable by its long numeric name [47]. A picture was downloaded off the vineyard's own social feed and put back up on the website.
Two other graphics are not photographs at all. One is a wax seal mockup from a design studio, which is a purchased template rather than a photograph of anything. The other is a t-shirt artwork file more than ten thousand pixels wide, being used as a web banner [47].
Nothing here is broken. This is what a website looks like when the business is busy and the pictures come from whatever is closest to hand. The Instagram account carries 892 posts and about 17,000 followers [48]. The website is being fed by the same phone that feeds the Instagram, and the Instagram is winning.
Then there is the absence. The navigation has an item labeled About. It links to a page of frequently asked questions [47]. For a business whose entire pitch is a family and several generations of winemaking, there is no page anywhere that tells that story.
What Visitors Say
The Google listing carries a 4.5 rating across 625 reviews as of August 2026 [49]. Marmon, Joining Technologies, Kinsley, USA Mechanical, and Copper Hill do not hold that many between them. Yelp adds 190 reviews and roughly 392 photographs on the listing [50].
Three themes repeat. The setting, especially the deck and the sunsets over the vines. The wine, described as ranging widely with the sweeter end best represented. And the staff, named as friendly and accommodating. Three Yelp reviewers name the owner, Tim, directly [50].
Where Brignole's Messaging and Its Reception Diverge
These two are aligned. The vineyard says family, seven days a week, food trucks and live music, and 625 reviewers describe exactly that. Alignment is rarer than a gap, and it is the honest reading here.
What is missing is not accuracy. It is authorship. Brignole is the most photographed business in East Granby, and almost none of that photography was commissioned by Brignole. Six hundred and twenty-five reviewers and 392 uploaded pictures have built this vineyard's public image on its behalf. The family whose name is on the sign has no page of their own to point to.
The Pattern: Reviewers Name More Staff Than Owners
Five of these six businesses have no photograph of a single person who works there. Only USA Mechanical does, and its fourteen faces stop at the office door.
That is the pattern, and it is not a story about neglect. Every one of these websites is maintained. Marmon updated its About page in April 2026. Joining Technologies added a wall of customer logos in May 2026. Kinsley revised its leadership page in April 2026. These are tended properties. What they do not contain is people.
Meanwhile, the people are everywhere in the reviews. Truck drivers compliment the loading crew at Bradley Park Road. A customer names Justin Cyr for cutting a pipe for a Quinceanera. A senior housing director names Brian and Glenn. Golfers name Paul, diners name Robin, and Yelp reviewers name Tim. Across six businesses, the public named more employees by name than the six businesses named between them.
The dating tells you why. Visual material here arrives in bursts and then stops. Twenty-three photographs of the Marmon technology center, all made in one pass in December 2024. Three separate portrait sessions at USA Mechanical, in July 2022, March 2023, and September 2024, each one a run of consecutive frames. Two Kinsley portraits from December 2019 and a third from June 2020. A full Copper Hill site rebuild in April 2025 and a seasonal banner that has not moved since.
Copy can be fixed from a laptop at ten at night. Photographs cannot. Photographs require an afternoon, a room, and everyone standing in the same place at the same time, and that is the one thing a busy company cannot schedule. So the words stay current and the pictures stay where they were.
There is also a reason particular to this town. East Granby's industry arrived attached to a runway in Windsor Locks, and it has always sold outward, to procurement departments in other states. Its village businesses sell to people who walk in. Neither half has ever needed to introduce itself locally. So neither half has.
