Plainville, Connecticut: Six Businesses in the Smallest Town That Still Makes Things
Research conducted August 2026. Figures and website details reflect that date.
Plainville Was Built by a Canal, a Railroad, and One Electrical Company
Plainville is flat. That is not a throwaway line about scenery. It is the reason the town exists.
The land was part of Farmington and was settled around 1657 [1]. People called it the Great Plain, and the name Plainville came out of that around 1830 [1]. It sits on a shelf of level ground between two peaks of the Metacomet Ridge, Bradley Mountain and Pinnacle Rock [2]. The soil was shallow and sandy. Nobody built a fortune farming it.
But a long flat run is what a canal wants. The Farmington Canal opened in 1828 and ran from New Haven up to Northampton, Massachusetts [2]. The stretch through Plainville was called the Long Level. A state historical marker stands beside that stretch today. It was put up in 1971 by the Connecticut Historic Commission and the Plainville Historical Society. It calls the Long Level the single most important factor in the town's growth [3]. The canal was 36 feet wide and 4 feet deep, dug by hand and horse [3]. The town center grew up around a landing called Bristol Basin [3].
How Plainville Became Its Own Town in 1869
The canal lasted twenty years. Then the railroads came and took the towpath [2]. Two lines ended up crossing here, and by 1869 Plainville had enough warehouses, factories and taverns to separate from Farmington and incorporate on its own [1][2]. Its first census, in 1870, counted 1,433 people [4].
The Company That Built the Buildings You Can Still See
Almost everything industrial you can look at in Plainville was built by one company across fifty years.
The Trumbull brothers organized an electrical parts company here in the last years of the 1890s [5]. They started in a rented barn making porcelain fittings, and within a year they had brick buildings on Woodford Avenue and had grown from four employees to forty [5]. General Electric bought a majority stake around 1918 [5]. Under GE the company kept the Trumbull name and kept growing. By 1942 it employed nearly 1,000 people and was the largest employer in town [5]. By the 1950s it was over 1,200 [5]. The plant is roughly fifteen brick blocks on 20.43 acres, built between 1912 and 1952, split by the railroad, with a four-story office facing Woodford Avenue [5].
That is the building stock. The population curve tells you what it did to the town. Plainville had 2,189 people in 1900 and 16,733 in 1970 [6][7]. It has about 17,468 today [8]. The town grew more than sevenfold in seventy years and has been roughly the same size ever since.
What Happened After GE Sold the Plant
GE sold its Industrial Solutions business to ABB in June 2018 [9]. The following year ABB announced it was merging its Plainville office into a new development center in Bloomfield [10]. U-Haul renovated 183,711 square feet of the former GE space and now rents vehicles and storage there [11].
Other things filled in. Americold built a tall refrigerated warehouse on Northwest Drive and became the town's second largest taxpayer [11]. A medical office building and cancer center opened on the New Britain line in 2015 [11]. Plainville Stadium, a quarter-mile racetrack that ran from 1948 to 1981, was closed and sold to a developer, and a Lowe's stands there now [12]. The town bought Robertson Airport, which opened in 1911 and is the oldest airfield in Connecticut, and now owns it outright [13].
Who Employs People in Plainville Now
There are 9,757 jobs inside Plainville's ten square miles and 10,104 employed residents [8]. Those two numbers are nearly the same. This is not a bedroom town. The largest sectors are manufacturing at 1,370 jobs, construction at 1,310, government at 1,287, health care and social assistance at 1,285, and retail at 1,160 [8]. There are 1,759 active businesses registered here [8]. The town names Tilcon, Gems Sensors, Connecticut Tool and Manufacturing, Mott Corporation and Wheeler Clinic as its largest taxpayers and employers [14].
One note on numbers before we start. The town's 2022 annual financial report contains a table ranking employers by how many people they employ inside Plainville. That table does not survive text extraction from the published PDF, so the in-town headcounts below come from a secondary transcription of it, and they are four years old [15]. Everything else here is sourced directly.
These are the six businesses this article covers, and that is what they are operating inside of.
Manafort Brothers:
107 Years Old, With Nobody's Picture on the Website
Manafort Brothers is a heavy construction and demolition contractor at 414 New Britain Avenue [16]. The 2022 town table puts about 515 of its people in Plainville, more than any other private employer [15]. Company-wide, the president told NBC News in 2019 that it employed about 700 [17]. It is the largest private employer in a town of 17,468.
What Manafort Brothers Says About Itself
The company tells its story as a family line. James Manafort founded it in 1919 as the New Britain House Wrecking Company [18]. It was renamed Manafort Brothers in 1946 and run by his four sons, Anthony, Frank, John and Paul [18]. A third generation of James, Frank and Jon expanded it into concrete, utilities, bridges, rail and nuclear decommissioning [18]. Four fourth-generation family members lead it today: Jim Jr., David, Justin and Jason [18].
The project list is the other half of the pitch. Manafort worked at Ground Zero in 2001 [18]. It decommissioned the Connecticut Yankee and Maine Yankee nuclear plants [18]. It built for Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun [18]. Engineering News Record ranked it first in the country for excavation and foundation work in 2000 [18].
What the Photography at Manafort Brothers Shows
There is no team page. There is no leadership page. Four generations of one family are named in prose on the history page, and not one of them appears in a photograph anywhere on the site [18].
The pictures that are there are of work. Project galleries, a timelapse of pier construction in Rhode Island, an aerial view of a bridge job. The vantage points say these were shot on live sites for the record, not staged afterward. They are good at what they are for, which is proving the equipment showed up and the concrete got placed.
The careers page is a paragraph of text, a job list and a form [19]. There is no picture of the crew you would be joining. On LinkedIn the company posts project photos and job openings [20]. Its Facebook page has 6,024 followers [21].
This is what happens when a company has 107 years of reputation and never needed a marketing department. The work brought the next job. Nobody ever had to build a headshot budget.
What Customers and Employees Say About Manafort Brothers
Across 24 Google reviews as of August 2026, Manafort Brothers holds a 4.5 average [22]. The reviews are short and they are about specific people. One thanks an employee by first name for keeping the paperwork straight before a project started [22]. Others use the words hard working, detailed and professional [22]. On Indeed, 23 reviews mention room to grow and flexibility around family, with the sharpest criticism being that the company holds onto older ways of doing things [23]. A 2019 trade profile quoted the president saying what makes the owners proud is people who stay and retire there [24].
The Gap at Manafort Brothers
Reputation ahead of messaging, and by a wide margin. Customers name individual employees in public reviews. The company's own website does not name or show a single person below the family. Somewhere in Plainville are hundreds of people who built bridges and took down a nuclear plant. The one place their faces are missing is their own employer's website.
Wheeler Health Moved Its Headquarters to Bristol and Left a Health Center Behind
Wheeler is a behavioral health and primary care organization founded in 1968 [25]. Its building at 91 Northwest Drive was its first, and in August 2020 that building became a federally qualified health center, Wheeler's fifth [25]. The 2022 town table put about 425 Wheeler employees in Plainville [15]. Across the whole organization, its most recent federal filing shows $98.5 million in revenue for fiscal 2024 and about 1,140 staff [26][27].
What Wheeler Health Says About Itself
Wheeler calls itself a statewide provider. It offers primary care, behavioral health, dental and addiction services under one roof [28]. It leans on awards. Its leadership page lists Top Workplace wins, a Hartford Business Journal Power 25 listing for its chief executive, and a commencement invitation from a university [29].
The larger claim is the Bristol move. In 2024 Wheeler opened One Hope Street in Bristol, a 46,000 square foot health center and administrative headquarters, and its first new construction since 1972 [25]. The chief executive told The Bristol Edition in 2023 that roughly 180 employees would move there from the Plainville headquarters [30]. Federal support of $980,000 helped fund it [31].
That is worth stating plainly, because the town's employer table predates it. Wheeler's corporate headquarters is no longer in Plainville. What remains at 91 Northwest Drive is a health center seeing patients, which is a different thing from a head office and arguably a more visible one.
What the Photography at Wheeler Health Shows
The Executive and Senior Leadership page lists 39 people by name, with degrees, licenses, titles and awards [29]. It carries no photographs of any of them. Not one. It is a text list, carefully maintained and clearly current, of the people who run an organization of about 1,140, and you cannot see a single face.
The page names Kim Pepice as Senior Director of Behavioral Health Services and Site Operations for Plainville [29]. That is the person running the building on Northwest Drive, named on the internet, unphotographed.
The rest of the imagery is patient-facing and general, the way health care marketing usually is. An outside agency built the site [29]. Wheeler runs four social accounts and employs a vice president for marketing communications [29]. This is not a shop without the means. It made a choice.
What Patients and Reviewers Say About Wheeler in Plainville
The Plainville center holds a 3.2 average across 104 Google reviews as of August 2026 [32]. That is the largest review volume of any business in this article. Three themes repeat. Reviewers describe scheduling pressure and clinician workload. Reviewers describe therapist turnover and being seen by someone early in their career. And a third group describes specific, concrete help, including one reviewer who credits the clinic with a turning point years ago and another who praises the on-site pharmacy [32].
Those sit side by side in the same review list. That is what 104 reviews of a busy community health center usually look like.
The Gap at Wheeler Health
Messaging ahead of reception, in Plainville specifically. The awards are real. The federal money is real. But the 104 people who reviewed the Plainville center describe a busier and more uneven day than an award list implies. Wheeler speaks loudly at the state level and quietly at the building level. The building level is where the reviews get written.
Gems Sensors Has Been in Plainville Since 1955 and Has Had Four Owners Since 1997
Gems Sensors makes liquid level, flow and pressure sensors on Cowles Road [11]. The 2022 town table puts about 245 people there [15]. One aggregator puts the total at 260, an estimate, and these run rough [33].
What Gems Sensors Says About Itself
The company's history page is precise and it is proud of the garage-startup part. Edward H. Moore developed a level indicator in his basement and patented it in 1959 [34]. He and Gordon Seigle founded the company in 1955, and the name comes from their initials [34]. The first commercial success was a bilge switch for small boats [34]. The company grew from a 6,500 square foot building to 60,000 square feet in Plainville [34]. A company blog post puts the Plainville facility at 80,000 square feet [35].
The ownership history is the other story that page tells, and it tells it without flinching. Danaher bought Gems in 1997. Fortive was spun out in 2016. Gems merged with Setra in 2022. Ralliant was formed in 2025 [34]. Four corporate parents in under thirty years, all listed on their own timeline.
What the Photography at Gems Sensors Shows
The Plainville building has been photographed for the website and it looks like the building it is. There is no leadership page and no team page for the Plainville operation.
The more telling thing is where the people went. Careers no longer run through the Gems site. They run through the parent company's careers portal. The employee quoted there is a director of quality who started as a Gems intern thirteen years earlier [36]. That is a Plainville story, told on a website headquartered somewhere else.
The company blog still carries the piece calling the Plainville plant 80,000 square feet and describing the founder's basement [35]. It reads as though it was written by someone who liked working there, and it has not been touched in years. When a business changes owners four times, the marketing calendar is the first thing that stops being anybody's job.
What Customers and Employees Say About Gems Sensors
The Google listing holds a 2.7 average across 7 reviews as of August 2026 [37]. That is a small number and it should be read as small. Two of those reviews are from long-term industrial customers describing product lines discontinued without advance notice, and one describes difficulty reaching technical support [37]. On Indeed the Plainville location sits at 3.0 out of 5 [38]. Glassdoor reviews repeat a specific theme: leadership turnover, and the site being used as a rotation for corporate fast-track managers [39].
The Gap at Gems Sensors
Messaging ahead of reception. The company's own account is a seventy-year Plainville story with a founder and a basement in it. The retrievable customer and employee record describes a plant whose decisions get made elsewhere and whose managers keep changing. Both of those are true. The website only carries one of them.
Carling Technologies' Own Website Still Says the Company Is Independent
Carling Technologies makes circuit breakers, switches and power distribution units at 60 Johnson Avenue in Plainville, where its worldwide headquarters moved from West Hartford [40]. The 2022 town table puts about 217 people there [15]. Worldwide the company had 2,800 employees and about $170 million in annual sales when Littelfuse agreed to buy it in October 2021 for $315 million [41].
What Carling Technologies Says About Itself
Two different things, on two pages of the same website.
The company history page tells a clean four-generation story. Arthur Carling, a toolmaker, founded Carling Tool & Machine in 1920 [40]. He started in tools, dies and special machinery, then moved into the young electrical trade [40]. His son took over in 1948, then a son-in-law in 1950, then a grandson in 1975 [40]. The same page tracks the company outward. It records a European headquarters in Exeter, England, and an Asia-Pacific headquarters in Kowloon [40]. It records a plant in Zhongshan, and the sale of the aerospace and integrated marine divisions in 2012 [40]. The page carries a 2012 copyright line. It ends by saying that Carling is virtually unique among electrical component makers in remaining independent, most other suppliers having been bought by large conglomerates [40].
The quality mission page, on the same site, opens with the phrase "Carling Technologies, now part of Littelfuse" [42].
What the Photography at Carling Technologies Shows
There is no team page and no leadership page. The imagery is product photography of switches and breakers on white. For a company selling components to engineers, that is the correct choice. A rocker switch has to be shown at the angle an engineer will specify it from, and it is.
The history page is the find. It is fourteen years old by its own copyright line. It names a president who has since sold the company. Its claim about independence stopped being true in 2021 [40][43]. That is not neglect. That is a page nobody has needed to open since the acquisition, sitting quietly beneath a site that gets updated where the customers actually look.
Social is split the same way. The LinkedIn page is current and carries 4,937 followers under Littelfuse branding [44]. The Facebook page has 1,052 followers and its most recent visible post is from August 2024 [45].
What Customers Say About Carling Technologies
There is almost nothing to report, and that is the honest finding. Carling's Google listing holds a 4.7 average across 3 reviews as of August 2026 [46]. Three reviews cannot measure a company with 2,800 employees. One is from a boat owner whose switches lasted nine years [46].
The Gap at Carling Technologies
There is not enough public reception here to name a direction against, and inventing one would be dishonest. What can be said is narrower and more interesting. Carling's own materials disagree with each other about who owns the company, and the older page is the one telling the better story.
Loureiro Engineering Is Owned by Its Employees and Photographs Nine of Them
Loureiro Engineering Associates is an engineering, environmental and construction firm with its global headquarters at 100 Northwest Drive [47]. The 2022 town table puts about 205 people there [15]. It was founded in 1975 and celebrated fifty years at the Plainville headquarters in September 2025 [48].
What Loureiro Engineering Says About Itself
Two claims run through everything. The first is employee ownership. Loureiro is 100 percent employee-owned through an ESOP, and the site returns to that on its careers pages and on a page of its own [49][50]. Every employee is an owner, the company says, and each of them delivers with that in mind [49].
The second is client retention. The homepage states that 95 percent of the firm's work comes from existing clients or word of mouth. It also says its service is distinctly better than anyone else in the business [50]. The first half of that is a measurable operational claim. The second half is the kind of thing every firm says.
What the Photography at Loureiro Engineering Shows
Loureiro is the only business of the six with a working leadership page. Nine people appear, each photographed and each linked to a profile [51]. Brian Cutler is chief executive, David Fiereck is president, and seven vice presidents and principals follow [51].
The image files say the pictures were made at different times. Four of the nine carry a version suffix in the filename, meaning each replaced an earlier picture. The formats are mixed. The naming runs from full names to abbreviations to one file with a word appended for the website [51]. This is not one shoot delivered as a set. It is a page maintained over years by people adding pictures as they arrived.
Nine photographs against roughly 205 people in town is about four percent of the company [15][51]. Everyone else is text.
There is one real exception, and it is a good one. Loureiro publishes monthly employee features, naming individual staff and following their careers from internships forward [49]. That is the most sustained employee-visibility program of any business in this article, and it lives on the company's own site rather than only on social.
What Employees and Clients Say About Loureiro Engineering
Glassdoor shows a 3.5 rating from 48 ratings as of August 2026, with 62 percent saying they would recommend the firm and 80 percent approving of the chief executive [52]. That is the most substantial perception evidence available for any of the six. The Google listing holds a 2.8 average across 5 reviews, which is too few to weigh, and one of them is sharply negative [53]. Indeed shows 3.3 for the Plainville location [54].
The Gap at Loureiro Engineering
Messaging ahead of reception, on the retrievable evidence. The claim of being distinctly better than anyone else in the business is a large one. Forty-eight Glassdoor ratings averaging 3.5 describe a firm people are broadly positive about, not one nobody has a complaint with. The employee ownership claim, though, is not doing work it cannot support. It is structural, it is true, and it is the more persuasive of the two.
Mott Corporation Brought a Cabinet Secretary to Spring Lane and Has No Team Page
Mott Corporation makes filters and flow control parts out of sintered porous metal, on Spring Lane [55]. Lambert H. Mott founded it in 1959. The company is 100 percent employee-owned [55][56].
Mott sits right on the town line, and its address is genuinely contested. The company's website puts both buildings in Farmington: the head office at 75 Spring Lane and the Customer Innovation Center at 84 Spring Lane [57]. Its LinkedIn page puts 84 Spring Lane in Plainville [58]. Plainville's economic development office lists Mott among the town's largest taxpayers and employers [14]. All three are current, and each is what that party says today.
What Mott Corporation Says About Itself
Mott places itself at the technical end of manufacturing. It says it has built more than 30,000 engineered solutions across 13 industries [55]. It runs clean rooms for chip, medical and life science work [55]. Boris Levin has been president and chief executive since 2013. He took over from a president who had held the job eighteen years [56].
The recent news is growth. In February 2023 Mott announced a 65,000 square foot building [59]. It would quadruple output for clean energy work and add more than 100 people over time [59]. The ceremony drew the governor, a senator, a member of Congress, and the United States Secretary of Commerce, who handed the company the President's "E" Award for exporting [59][60]. The month after, Mott bought an engineering firm in Michigan [59].
What the Photography at Mott Corporation Shows
There is no leadership page and no team page on the website. A company that had a cabinet secretary in the building does not show you who works there.
What it does have is a record of the plant. The site carries pictures of its own buildings and its Customer Innovation Center. The gear in them is specific enough that these are Mott's rooms, not licensed clean-room stock.
The people are on LinkedIn instead. Mott runs employee spotlight posts naming individual staff, including a quality engineer of about three years described as having quadrupled capacity in the clean energy area [58]. Those posts name the person, give her tenure, quote her, and tie her to a company value. That is exactly what a team page is for. It runs on a platform the company does not own, in a feed that scrolls away.
What Customers Say About Mott Corporation
Mott holds a 5.0 average across 11 Google reviews as of August 2026 [61]. Every one is positive and they are short. The recurring words are product, service, people and energy [61]. Eleven reviews is a modest number, but it is an unbroken one, and no other business in this article has a clean sheet.
The Gap at Mott Corporation
Reputation ahead of messaging. Mott has a federal export award, a cabinet visit, a clean review record and employee ownership. Its website will tell you about porous metal in real depth. It will not tell you who makes it. The employee spotlights prove the company knows what naming a person is worth. They are just published where they disappear.
The Town Pattern:
Plainville Photographs Buildings and Products, Not the People Who Run Them
Six businesses, on the order of 1,700 in-town jobs between them, in a town of about 17,468 people. One working team page among them.
The pattern is consistent enough to count as a local convention. Manafort names four generations of owners in prose and photographs none of them [18]. Wheeler lists 39 leaders with credentials, awards and titles, and no faces [29]. Carling and Gems have neither list nor photograph [34][40]. Loureiro photographs nine people [51]. Mott photographs its clean rooms [55].
Where employees do appear, they appear on LinkedIn. Mott names a quality engineer and quotes her [58]. Loureiro publishes a monthly employee feature [49]. The best Gems Sensors employee story available, a thirteen-year climb from intern to director, sits on its corporate parent's careers portal [36]. Three of the six have worked out that naming a person is the strongest thing they can publish. None of them does it on the page a customer lands on first.
There is a reason for this, and it is structural rather than careless. Five of these six sell to other businesses. Their buyers are engineers, procurement officers, transportation departments and hospital systems. Those buyers want a spec sheet, a safety record and a reference. None of that has historically required a photograph of the shop floor. The marketing budget goes to trade shows and catalogs because that is where the orders come from.
The ownership picture explains the rest. Gems has had four corporate parents since 1997 [34]. Carling was bought in 2021 [41]. Wheeler moved its head office to Bristol in 2024 [25]. When the decisions move out of town, so does the reason to invest in how the local building looks to the public.
The exceptions are the two employee-owned firms. Loureiro and Mott are both 100 percent ESOP companies, and they are the two publishing the most about individual employees [49][58]. That is not a coincidence to lean on too hard, but it is worth noticing. When the workforce owns the company, somebody eventually asks why the workforce is not in the pictures.
