No Purchased Preset Matches a Background Color Consistently
The previous pieces in this series argued against purchasing presets on grounds of craft and honesty. This one is about what happens when you are hired to match work you did not shoot, and why the gap between those two photographers shows up where nobody wants it to.
A company photographs new employees every year. A photographer shoots the first cohort, establishes a look, delivers the images. The following year a different photographer gets the call. The brief is simple: match what we already have. The background is a specific gray, or a warm neutral, or a company color that has been in every headshot for three years. The new photographer's job is not to create anything. It is to continue something. What they walk into determines whether they can.
What the new photographer walks into
The existing images are the brief. Not a color swatch, not a hex value, not a written specification. The images themselves. The new photographer has to look at what was produced before, understand what decisions produced it, and reproduce those decisions in a different room on a different day with different equipment.
This is not a creative challenge. It is a diagnostic one. The question is not what should this look like. The question is what did this and why, and can I replicate it.
The answer depends entirely on whether the photographer can read the image as a set of decisions rather than as a result. A result can be admired. A set of decisions can be reproduced.
Variables exist even in a controlled room
An experienced photographer's first move is to control the environment: block natural light, turn off ambient artificial light, make the photographer's own sources the only ones in play. That is standard professional practice and it matters.
It does not solve the problem. Camera bodies from different manufacturers use different color science. Different models within the same brand do too. Light sources vary by brand, by model, and by power setting, even within a matched pair. These are not equipment failures. They are physics. The professional response is to eliminate what can be eliminated and compensate for what cannot. What remains after that discipline is applied still requires a photographer who knows which adjustment addresses which variable. That knowledge does not come from a file.
What a measurement tells you and what it does not
A background that looked right in the editing suite looks wrong once the client sees it next to the previous set. The values were checked. The monitor is profiled. The numbers say the color is correct.
In 1824 Michel-Eugène Chevreul took a job at a Paris tapestry factory and received a complaint that the black thread looked weak. He tested the dye. The dye was fine. What he found instead was that the black's appearance depended entirely on what sat next to it. A color that measures correctly in isolation can still look wrong in context, because the eye does not evaluate colors one at a time. It evaluates them in relationship to everything surrounding them. Chevreul spent the next fifteen years documenting this as a testable, predictable law. It has not been overturned. I wrote about this in detail in the color series on this site.
The practical consequence for the matching problem is this. The client looking at two sets of images side by side is not asking whether either image's background color is accurate in isolation. They are asking whether the two backgrounds belong to the same body of work. Those are different questions, and only one of them has an instrument. The photographer who understands that distinction can address what the client is actually seeing. The photographer who reaches for a more precise measurement is answering a question nobody asked.
Color acuity is not a setting
The ability to look at two images and see that one background is reading cooler than the other, to name which direction the shift went and which adjustment would address it, is a perceptual skill. It is built over time. It is not installed by owning better equipment, and no calibration process touches it.
The Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test is the industry standard measure of color acuity. It is a box of eighty-five colored plastic caps. You arrange them in order of hue under controlled daylight conditions. The task is simple to describe. The errors reveal exactly where your color discrimination weakens. Dean Farnsworth built it in 1943 to screen Navy personnel. It has been a professional standard for more than sixty years. No piece of photographic equipment can take it on your behalf. The reason this matters in the matching scenario is specific. The residual variables that survive a controlled room are often small. A background that reads half a step warmer in the afternoon frames than in the morning frames, a slightly different color rendering from one camera body to another, a power setting that shifted the strobe's color temperature two hundred Kelvin. These are not gross failures. They are the kind of differences that show up when images are placed side by side, that a client feels as something is off before they can name it, and that a photographer with trained color perception catches before the client has to say anything.
A photographer without that perception solves the problem by iteration, adjusting and checking, adjusting and checking, without being able to say in advance why one move will work and another will not. The work still gets done. It gets done slower, and it gets done without the diagnostic confidence that makes the whole conversation with the client clean.
The preset is most tempting exactly here
Given the complexity of the matching problem, the appeal of a preset is understandable. There is an established look. A preset could be built to approximate it. Apply it to the new set and the job is mostly done.
Here is what that approach cannot account for. The preset was built from a specific set of conditions. The new session has different conditions, because some variables were different the moment a different photographer walked into a different room with different equipment on a different day. The preset applies fixed values to a variable problem. Every one of the residual differences between the old session and the new one will show up as a discrepancy the preset did not address, and the photographer who applied it has no framework for identifying which adjustment targets which discrepancy, because they did not build the look from an understanding of its components.
A preset the photographer built themselves gets closer than a purchased one, because it was made from their own understanding of their own conditions. That is worth doing. It is still not consistent, because the conditions of the new session are not the conditions the preset was built from. The fine-tuning that closes the remaining gap is exactly the trained perception the rest of this article describes.
The most common result is a set of images that are close but not consistent, each one passing inspection individually and the set failing once the images are seen together. That is precisely the failure mode the Color in Practice series opens with: a problem invisible one image at a time that only appears once the work is assembled. Nobody was careless. The tool simply could not do what the situation required, and the situation always requires what the tool cannot do.
The client comes back for the next round of new hires
A client whose headshot program runs across multiple years and multiple photographers is not managing a creative project. They are managing a standard. The standard exists in the images they already have, and the question they are asking every time they book a new session is whether the work will continue to look like it belongs to itself.
Clients do not think about color science. They think about whether a problem arose. A photographer who can match the existing work without the session becoming a technical conversation is a photographer who gets called back. A photographer who delivers images that require rounds of revision, or who cannot explain why frame 47 reads differently from frame 12, is one who does not.
The marketing calculation here is not complicated. A client who never has to think about color consistency is a client who does not think about replacing their photographer. That outcome is not produced by a preset. It is produced by a photographer who understood what they were doing well enough to do it again.
